Apple made plenty of statements on Tuesday, but the highlights were probably a few pieces of new hardware including three versions of iPhone, a new iPad, and the Apple Watch Series 5.

I had a opportunity to have a look at all them after the show and have a few quick takeaways.

iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Guru, iPhone 11 Pro Max

Apple is placing its focus on the things people care about: cost , battery life and cameras.

The iPhone 11’s list price is $699, which is $50 cheaper than last year’s equivalent, the XR. Apple also promises an hour of battery life, which makes it the longest-lasting iPhone ever. The iPhone 11 Guru promises 4 hours more battery life compared to the iPhone XS, while the iPhone 11 Guru has 5 hours longer than the iPhone XS Max.

You get wide angle, ultra wide angle and 2x optical zoom on the Pro versions, provided by three distinct — and all very visible — cameras on the trunk.

The iPhone 11 does not have the optical zoom. However, the iPhone 11 can now take portraits of things besides just people since it has two lenses. I also like the front facing camera all three that can turn into wide angle for fitting more people to a selfie.

They seem fine. I particularly enjoy the midnight-green color and the glossy finish on the iPhone 11 Guru and iPhone 11 Guru Max.

I wish there was inverse wireless charging to charge AirPods — a characteristic that was rumored but was not said. I like that Apple will include an 18W quick charger using the Pro versions for quicker charging. The cameras appear promising in early tests, too.

10.2-inch iPad

The new iPad begins at $329.

The new 10.2-inch iPad felt as an iPad Pro. I really like the additional computer support, something the 9.7-inch lacked without Apple’s Smart Connector. And you can definitely see and feel the additional screen size. Starting at $329, this appears to be a no-brainer for the majority of people who “just need a new iPad.”

I am really surprised Apple did not announce sleep monitoring for the Apple Watch. It seemed like this was going to make an appearance, but perhaps it is simply not ready yet. But, I really do love the new Always on Screen. This means you can always find the time and the screen never turns off, but you still get up to 18 hours of battery life (or more if you turn it off)

An Apple employee I talked with said it is impossible to return to an Apple Watch that does not have this, so we’ll see how true that is. I enjoy the new titanium finish, and the ceramic one that Apple’s bringing back, but they are way too expensive for my tastes, involving $850 and $1,300 depending on the finish you desire.

Most persuasive? The new $199 cost for the two-year-old Series 3 Apple Watch. That is a steal.
